Mexican Revolution Artist Statement
Without a cause
Angel Morazan, Ricardo Garcia, Angel Martinez, Kassandra Urbina, Talissa Ruiz
1910-1940
In this picture, there are many messages that represent what happened during the Mexican Revolution. There is one federal fighting with two women in the front, while in the back there is two Mexican rebels looking at the fight not really knowing what to fight for or really caring about it. Another message was that a lot of women had an important role during this time, and they would participate in the war for the better being of their families.
During the revolution many rebels that were participating in it didn’t really have a cause to fight. They would start fighting for a small reason and keep fighting in it just because they were so used to fighting. The two men in the back represent those rebels that don’t really know what they keep fighting for. They just drink beer and have a good time.
The Mexican flag was a clue that it was the Mexican revolution. The beer added by Photoshop was to show that he didn’t really care and was interested in something else.

Essay based on the Mexican Revolution and The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela
The People’s Purpose In The Revolution
A revolution starts because people in the society want a change, they want their government to be different, people get tired of the oppression and the injustice of the government and they can only think in one thing “revolution”. But what happens when these people in the society start losing interest? What happens when they stop having a purpose? Or more important what happens when people fighting in the revolution do not have an idea why are they fighting? During the revolutions many people were used to fight in it, while many of them did not have an idea what were they fighting for. In The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela, Demetrio Macias represents the people’s lack of awareness about their role in the Mexican Revolution
The Mexican revolution started because of the unfairness during el Porfiriato, a period of time when Porfirio Diaz was President of Mexico. At the beginning of his reign, Porfirio Diaz did many things for Mexico. He created a more stable government and got rid of crime. Mexico grew, structurally and economically, but he did many bad things, too. During his reign the people in power became wealthy but the rest of the population remained poor (Baxman 2). The poor people in México did not have the same benefits as the rich people. All the economic benefits of the country went to the rich people and the land ownership was concentrated in the hands of

certain people while they were taken away from million of peasants (The Mexican Revolution). This created a huge poverty problem in the lower class. Very few people owned land and because of this the lower class could not make any money and they could not afford food. So as the poor became poorer the rich became richer. This lack of money to afford food created a hunger epidemic that devastated the lower class. This corrupt system of favoring one class over the other was the cause Mexico to experience a depression in 1907 and lasting until 1908. This depression exposed the problems of the Diaz administration which created the idea of a revolution (Baxman 2). The lower and working class people had many factors such as poor working conditions, inflation, inferior housing, low wages, and deficient social services. Within the classes everyone was fighting; men, women, and children all contributed to the fight for freedom from Diaz (Foster 146). These were some of the reasons why the society wanted to revolt against the government, similar to Demetrio Macias in The Underdogs, he started fighting because of the injustice to the poor people and because of revenge to the government by sending two federals to his house, who tried to rape his wife, killed his dog and burn his house without a reason. He began to revolt because part of him wanted revenge and the other part was because he was tired of the injustice to the poor. Part of Demetrio started with a valid purpose that was fighting for the rights of the poor, but the other part was an invalid purpose, because revenge is never the solution to a problem.
Each person has their reasons in fighting, some fight for the rights of the whole society while others fight for personal causes. During the revolution existed other types of rebels, the ones who did not have an idea for what they were fighting. The ones that fought for the rights of
García 4
the people, fought for a better distribution in Mexico’s economy, a better and equal distribution of land and basic rights like better wages. The ones that fought for personal causes can be some of the rich because even though they did not care about the poor they fought because they were tired of Porfirio Diaz, or people like Demetrio that wanted revenge, because they were taken away things that belonged to them. And the ones that did not have an idea for what they were fighting, many of these people did not have a purpose, they were just following what other people did, they were just fighting because people they knew were fighting or because they did not had anything to lose. During this time there were some people who did not wanted to fight and they did not wanted to be involved in the revolution so they fled to the United States. While the revolution continued Demetrio Macias started losing interest, until he reached the point when he did not knew any more why was he fighting for. Demetrio’s wife asked him “why do you keep on fighting, Demetrio?” (Azuela 202). Demetrio did not have an instant answer. While he thought, he picked up a stone and threw it to the bottom of the canyon and said to his wife: “Look at the stone how it keeps on going…” (Azuela 202) He could not explain the reason why was he fighting; he just had the need to continue, and he knew he would never stop until the revolution ended or when he died. Exactly like the rock, the rock will never stop until someone stops it or until it reaches its end or destination.
During a revolution when people do not know why they are fighting, they can lose interest and as a result they can create a disadvantage that can make them lose the fight and die. At the beginning of the Underdogs Demetrio had a purpose in fighting, he was fighting for revenge against the federals and for the rights of the poor. He fought for revenge against the government because two federals came into his house, killed his dog, tried to abuse his wife and burned his house trying to kill him. He fought for the rights of the poor too; he was willing to
García 5
give up everything that he owned for the rights of everyone else. He believed that everyone should have the opportunity to own land and live well. As the revolution continued Demetrio start losing interest and focus on fighting, he no longer care why was he fighting for. He no longer had a reason in fighting. This can be one important motive why everyone got killed including Demetrio Macias. Having a purpose is an advantage, and it is demonstrated in the Underdogs while Demetrio and his friends had a reason and a purpose they were victorious in every fight, but when they no longer had it they were defeated.
Demetrio represents the people that do not have a purpose in fighting, but they have an impulse to continue fighting even though it is not necessary. Not knowing why you are fighting or not having a purpose can alter you in some way that can cause a defeat or a great disadvantage. The absence of knowing why you are fighting reduces your chances of winning and focusing on the goal of winning. During the revolution thousands of people did not had a reason in fighting, but they were very influential in the victory of Mexico and in the economic and political change that benefit all the Mexicans and ended with the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz (Marcovitz 57).
